Christmas tips for every business

We love the festive period, especially the odd sherry and cheeky mince pie. But before you take a few days off to spend quality time with family and friends, have a think about your company and whether there’s anything that can be improved for your staff and customers. Here are some of our top tips.


Spruce up the workplace

Every working environment needs an occasional clear out. December is a great opportunity to throw away and recycle everything from old paperwork to things that have been left in the fridge for too long. Whether you give each member of staff a focus area or allocate the entire job to one very dedicated individual, you’ll find that coming back to work in January is a far smoother process.

Treat your staff

The Christmas party is always good fun but it’s also a good idea to spread festive cheer throughout the ranks during December. Remember that things can get pretty hectic at this time of year, so small treats such as buns, happy tunes and festive jumpers can help people to relax a little, which in turn helps them to focus and get things done.

Customer-facing areas

Depending on your business, customers may have access to the majority of your premises or be limited to a small reception area. Either way, make the place look even more colourful and welcoming with some tasteful decorations. People really do notice a lack of the expected, so if your business is the only place without a bit of tinsel it could reflect badly on your brand.

Update your digital channels

If your business is closed for a little while over Christmas and New Year, make sure that this is clearly communicated on your website. It would be great if someone could keep up the social media during the holidays, but if not you can use scheduling software so that your channels don’t go too quiet. Rather than sharing business-related promotions, push out some fun content such as quizzes, feel-good articles and photo greetings from your team.

Use the out of office function

You may have more than a week away from the workplace, but some customers aren’t so lucky. Make sure that every member of staff turns on their out of office emails, clearly stating when they’ll return and giving alternative contact details if applicable.

Do something for a worthy cause

Christmas is a time for giving, so get your team involved in some kind of fundraising activity. It doesn’t have to be anything strenuous and could even take the form of a sponsored bake off or getting everyone involved in Christmas Jumper Day on Friday 18 December.
